Their debut album — England Made Me — was a distressing, vacant eye staring over the unspoken horror of everyday England, so one wondered where they could go from there. With The Facts of Life, they moved that voyeuristic, cynical stare away from suicide and car crashes and focused it on small-town dating and disenchanted sex lives. Strangely enough, the horror feels the same. Songs like the utterly menacing hook of “The Art of Driving” will chill even the most neutral of listeners, while the John Barry-influenced “Weekend” strolls along with such desolate grace that it’s just subtly elegant. Vocalist Sarah Nixey sings with impassioned distance that serves up the disparagement nicely. Lines such as “Don’t even look at me ’till we’re alone,” “Careful not to touch, we’ve drunk enough/Just another weekend falling,” or “Read the message on the bottle/Go and drink yourself to death” probably won’t become national anthems anytime soon. All the better for it, then. As in BBR’s debut, the same barren instrumentation and distanced vocals are still here, but this time around, there seems to be a pop sensibility that evokes far more seditious strengths than ever before. This produces a delightfully sinister contradiction. “Straight Life,” for instance, has Nixey chiming, “It’s a beautiful morning,” and only BBR could make such a statement sound truly sardonic. The closing “Goodnight Kiss” is also brimming with beauty, yet — at heart — still a song with pained regret. All this doesn’t even begin to get near the marvel that is the title track, either. “The Facts of Life” is found nestled in the album’s core and it still glares at you like a Stanley Kubrick-directed All Saints production. Simple, gorgeous, chart-friendly, and just plain evil, it is undoubtedly one of the most subversive singles ever written. Indeed, clocking in at just under 40 minutes, The Facts of Life is a precise, meticulous, deeply disturbing experience. The album is proof that there’s still life in pop music. What’s in the Bag? begins with “Will We Ever?,” in which Crenshaw takes the voice of a man on the road late at night, wondering when or if he’ll ever see his wife again, and the melancholy beauty of the lyric is matched by Greg Leisz’s steel guitar and the vibes of Bill Ware. It’s a powerful and richly evocative performance, and it sets the stage for the rest of the set, in which Crenshaw’s characters are haunted by the specters of failed romances, memories which are at once beautiful and heartbreaking, and the struggle to move on from life’s disappointments. The mood is lightened on a pair of R&B covers, but the plaintive tone of “Take Me With You” and “I’d Rather Be With You” still feels consistent with the album’s theme of men trying to make love work, under difficult circumstances. Secrets of the Night – B&W $14.99 This muddled murder mystery-comedy was based on the Max Marcin stage play The Night Cap. Bank president Robert Andrews (James Kirkwood) has loaned someone money out of the bank funds and he wants to distract the bank examiner from examining the books and discovering the shortage. So he invites him, and the directors, over to his house. All sorts of intrigue happens at the gathering — Andrews argues with Jerry Hammond (Tom Ricketts), who is in love with his ward, Anne Maynard (Madge Bellamy). Lester Knoles (Arthur Stuart Hull), meanwhile, is jealous of Andrews’ friendship with his wife (Rosemary Theby). In addition, we discover that Andrews has a life insurance policy that will cover the shortage should he die. Not too surprisingly, after some strange goings-on, Andrews is found dead in Mrs. Knoles’ room. The police investigate and everybody seems to have a motive to kill Andrews. A lot of confusion ensues, until it is discovered that Andrews isn’t really dead after all, and the man who he loaned the money shows up and straightens things out. Now saddled with the knowledge that her late father was one the verge of finishing a book about an early-19th Century child killer who had made a deal with the devil in exchange for the ability to move in and out of hell, Kristel and a group of friends travel to the mine shaft where her father had been doing research in order to retrieve his personal belongings. After arriving at the site and gathering her father’s materials, Kristel and company are persuaded to venture 200 feet underground in order to take a guided tour of the mine. During the tour, it’s revealed that during the time that the mine was in operation condemned convicts were offered the opportunity to avoid the hangman’s noose by testing the shaft for deadly methane gas; if the criminal survived the excursion they were subsequently granted complete immunity for their crimes. The maniac behind those horrific child murderers had taken such a gamble after being given that option, and by all accounts perished in the subsequent explosion. When the tour is over and the elevator to the surface fails, the group playfully attempts to kill some time by communicating with the dead via the ouija board that belonged to Kristel’s father. Unfortunately for all involved, the spiritualistic apparatus opens a portal through which the demonic spirit of the child killer passes, immediately possessing one of the teens and driving her on a murderous rampage. Eli is also gay, and makes no secret of the fact that he’s looking for a nice guy that he can settle down with. Eli’s best friend Brett (Adam Goldberg) knows a woman named Jackie (Sasha Alexander), who says she has a friend who would be perfect for Eli. Thus Eli is introduced to Tom (Richard Ruccolo), a special education instructor and devoted nightlife enthusiast. Eli and Tom’s first date turns out to be just short of a disaster; Tom indulges in his overweening enthusiasm for alcohol and tobacco, and Eli is disgusted to learn Tom has never seen Gone With the Wind. Things appear to be over for Eli and Tom before they even started, until they meet by chance while shopping a few days later; this time, a conversation rather than an argument develops, and the two end up spending the night together. Eli begins to think love may have finally found him, until Tom dashes off the next morning, leaving Eli to wonder if Tom has any interest at all in a long-term commitment. A Night in Monte Carlo $24.99 Had Marcus Miller chosen a more fusion-centric path, it’s quite possible that he would have become as iconic among fusion heads as Jaco Pastorius or Miroslav Vitous. Miller certainly knows his way around his electric bass, and he probably would have been a great addition to Return to Forever if Stanley Clarke had been unavailable for their 2008 reunion tour and Chick Corea had offered him the gig. But that is speculation, of course. What we can say with certainty is that being hell-bent for fusion is not the path chosen by the highly eclectic, broad-minded Miller, who is as well known for his work with Luther Vandross and for co-writing E.U.’s 1988 funk/go-go hit “Da Butt” as he is for the composing, producing, and playing he did on Miles Davis’ Tutu and Amandla albums in the `80s. Nonetheless, Miller is quite capable of playing jazz when he wants to, and jazz is the main ingredient on A Night in Monte Carlo. Documenting a November 29, 2008 appearance in Monte Carlo, Monaco, this 63-minute CD unites Miller with the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra as well as with trumpeter/fl?gelhornist Roy Hargrove. Occasionally, A Night in Monte Carlo steps outside of jazz; “State of Mind” and “Your Amazing Grace” (both of which feature singer Ra l Mid n) are essentially vocal R&B. But instrumental jazz of the electric fusion variety dominates this concert, and the fact that Miller is operating in a very orchestral environment doesn’t mean that there isn’t room for stretching and improvising on memorable performances of Davis’ “So What,” George Gershwin’s “I Loves You, Porgy,” Jimmy Dorsey’s “I’m Glad There Is You” and Amandla’s title track. Some of those tunes have been beaten to death over the years, but not by fusion artists, and Miller manages to keep things intriguing even on some extremely familiar warhorses. A Night in Monte Carlo is not recommended to jazz purists; this is mainly jazz, but it’s jazz with rock, funk, and hip-hop elements. Fusion lovers, however, will be delighted to hear Miller in this electric jazz-oriented environment. ~ Alex Henderson
