Strabismus Surgery

Strabismus Surgery

$68.51

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Strabismus surgery is surgery on the extraocular muscles to correct the misalignment of the eyes. With approximately 1.2 million procedures each year, extraocular muscle surgery is the third most common eye surgery in the United States. Strabismus surgery is a one day procedure. The patient only spends few hours in the hospital with minimal preoperative preparation. The average duration of the surgery is variable according to the number of muscles operated. On average, every muscle operated takes 1015 minutes. In case of reoperations it may take longer. After surgery, pain is not significant. The patient should expect some soreness and redness, however pain killers are rarely needed. Again, in cases of reoperations, more pain is expected. Resection of the muscles is more painful in the post operative period than recession. It also leaves redness that lasts longer and may cause some vomiting in the early post operative period. This study had evaluated the effectiveness of the newly forming bone technique(NFBT) as an alternative treatment of Millers class I or II recessions.Patients presenting at least 1 site with recession >4mm and 1 condemned tooth or edentulous ridge were selected. The sample was divided into 2 groups:test(NFBT) and control (subepithelial connective tissue graft).Clinical examinations were performed by a single trained examiner at baseline and 1,3,6 and 9 months after surgery according to probing depth (PD),clinical attachment level(CAL),recession (R),bleeding on probing(BOP),plaque index (PI) and keratinized gingiva width(KGW).The analysis by t test have shown that both techniques are effective in the reduction of recession. The NFBT was more effective in the reduction of PD,BOP,PI and gain of CAL,but less effective in the increase of KGW. Intra group analysis showed a significant improvement of all clinical parameters for both groups, except for PI,BOP and PD in control group. These results suggest that the NFBT is effective to the treatment of large recession defects, allowing the reduction of recession and, possibly, regeneration of periodontal tissues Author: Ferraz, Bruna Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 72 Publication Date: 2010/02/14 Language: English Dimensions: 5.98 x 9.01 x 0.17 inches

Surgery

Surgery

$68.51

Surgery is a medical specialty that uses operative manual and instrumental techniques on a patient to investigate and/or treat a pathological condition such as disease or injury, to help improve bodily function or appearance, or sometimes for some other reason. An act of performing surgery may be called a surgical procedure, operation, or simply surgery. In this context, the verb operating means performing surgery. The adjective surgical means pertaining to surgery; e.g. surgical instruments or surgical nurse. The patient or subject on which the surgery is performed can be a person or an animal. A surgeon is a person who performs operations on patients. Persons described as surgeons are commonly medical practitioners, but the term is also applied to physicians, podiatric physicians, dentists and veterinarians. Surgery can last from minutes to hours, but is typically not an ongoing or periodic type of treatment. The term surgery can also refer to the place where surgery is performed, or simply the office of a physician, dentist, or veterinarian Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 66 Publication Date: 2009/11/03 Language: English Dimensions: 5.98 x 9.01 x 0.15 inches

Facial Sculpting: Plastic Surgery of the Facial Bones

Facial Sculpting: Plastic Surgery of the Facial Bones

$18.9

Beauty is more than skin deep….it goes all the way to the bone. How the face looks at the outside has a lot to do with how it is shaped on the inside. Like a roof on a house, the outer appearance of the face is highly influenced by the shape of the bone underneath it. Understanding and treating facial bone problems has a long history in plastic surgery. Since World War I, when trench warfare created a large number of severe facial injuries, plastic surgeons have been rebuilding, rearranging, and enhancing facial bones. Todays plastic surgeons pay particular attention in cosmetic surgery to how the skin, fat and muscle of the face redrapes over the bones, knowing full well its influence on the outer visible shape. Whether it is a facelift, nose job, or making ones face more gender specific, changing the shape of the underlying bone can lead to a better balanced and more attractive face. Dr. Barry Eppley, boardcertified plastic surgeon of Indianapolis, takes you down deep inside the face on a tour of its palpable architecture. Learn how many of the common, and some less well known, cosmetic facial bone procedures work and help make for more beautiful faces. Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic Surgery

$95.59

Laparoscopic surgery, also called minimally invasive surgery (MIS), bandaid surgery, keyhole surgery is a modern surgical technique in which operations in the abdomen are performed through small incisions (usually 0.51.5cm) as compared to larger incisions needed in traditional surgical procedures. Practicioners of open surgery who?] sometimes use the misleading defensive term microscopic surgery, which implies a small incision. citation needed] However, open surgery typically requires an incision large enough for the surgeons hands to enter the patient, while the term microscopic refers to various magnifying devices used during open surgery. Keyhole surgery uses images displayed on TV monitors for magnification of the surgical elements. Laparoscopic surgery includes operations within the abdominal or pelvic cavities, whereas keyhole surgery performed on the thoracic or chest cavity is called thoracoscopic surgery. Laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgery belong to the broader field of endoscopy. There are a number of advantages to the patient with laparoscopic surgery versus an open procedure. Once More With Feeling -

A successful psychiatrist and doting grandfather resurrects his dormant dream of becoming a professional singer while experiencing a personal crisis that mirrors that of his increasingly neurotic daughter in this endearing comedy drama from Flannel Pajamas director Jeff Lipsky. Frank Gregorio (Chazz Palminteri) lives a charmed life; he has a unique gift for helping his patients work through their problems, a beautiful wife, and two gorgeous grandchildren thanks to his eldest daughter Lana (Drea de Matteo). Introduced to karaoke through a patient with parent issues, and then again at his granddaughter’s birthday party, Frank finds himself drifting back to the days when all he wanted in life was to become a professional singer. Instead of following his dream back then, Frank chose the practical route in life. When Frank starts exercising his rusty vocal chords, his wife Angela (Maria Tucci) assumes that he’s just practicing to sing at their younger daughter’s upcoming wedding. Lately, the wannabe crooner is spending more and more time with femme fatale karaoke aficionado Lydia (Linda Fiorentino), who hasn’t been entirely forthright about her true intentions towards Frank. Meanwhile, Lana is becoming increasingly neurotic about her post-pregnancy weight, considering plastic surgery and an affair with a strapping police officer in hopes of boosting her self-esteem. As the rash decisions made by Frank and Lana yield unexpectedly dire consequences, the family comes together in a sincere attempt to ensure that the insecure father and daughter realize they will always be loved despite their insecurities. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Patient Registration

Patient Registration

$76.47

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Patient registration is the concept and set of methods needed to correlate the reference position of a virtual 3D dataset gathered by computer medical imaging with the reference position of the patient. This procedure is crucial in computer assisted surgery, in order to insure the reproducitibility of the preoperative registration and the clinical situation during surgery. The use of the term patient registration out of this context can lead to a confusion with the procedure of registering a patient into the files of a medical institution. This is why a better term would be patient reference registration. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Atrial Fibrillation After Cardiac Surgery

Atrial Fibrillation After Cardiac Surgery

$444.48

Cardiac surgery is performed on hundreds of thousands of patients a year, and can have an important beneficial impact on the outcomes of patients with coronary and valvular heart diseases. Despite the favorable recovery of most patients, some will have their postoperative period interrupted by the development of atrial fibrillation, with a host of potential complications including stroke. High risk subgroups may develop atrial fibrillation in more than half of cases, and often despite aggressive prophylactic measures. Treatment of atrial fibrillation and its aftermath can also add days to the hospital stay of the cardiac surgical patient. In an era of aggressive cost cutting and optimization of utilization of health care resources, the financial impact of this arrhythmic complication may be enormous. Experimental studies have led to a greater understanding of the mechanism of atrial fibrillation and potential precipitating factors in the cardiac surgical patient. Prophylactic efforts with betablockers, antiarrhythmic drugs and atrial pacing are being used, or are being investigated in clinical trials. New methods of achieving prompt cardioversion with minimal disruption of patient care, and prevention of the thromboembolic complications of atrial fibrillation, are also important therapeutic initiatives. This text is designed to aid health care professionals in the treatment of their patients in the recovery period after cardiac surgery, and to instigate additional research efforts to limit the occurrence of, and the complications following, this tenacious postoperative arrhythmia. Software Engineering Ontology Separation of Concerns

Software Engineering Ontology Separation of Concerns

$109.93

In science, we try to separate the different views in order to evaluate things in a more realistic way. In this book, we present the overall research theories, models and developments that occur in the software engineering field from the four views or perspectives; Process, Project, People and Product. The goal is to make a distinction between the progresses in each area and explore the opportunities in finding windows for more research in any of those four views. This will also organize the software engineering project into smaller manageable parts that can be easy to understand and identify. It should reduce complexity and improve clarity. This concept is at the core of software engineering. The 4Ps concerns overlap and distinct. The book will try to point to the two sides. Concepts such as; ontology, abstraction, modeling and views or separation of concerns always include some sort of abstraction or focus. The goal is to draw a better image or understanding for the problem. In another goal, we hope that the separation of concerns will help software engineering students better understand the large number of modeling and terminology concepts. Unusual Software Bug

Unusual Software Bug

$66.91

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Unusual software bugs are a class of software bugs that are considered exceptionally difficult to understand and repair. There are several kinds, mostly named after scientists who discovered counterintuitive things. Statistical bugs can only be detected in aggregates and not in single runs of a section of code. These are bugs that usually affect code that is supposed to produce random or pseudorandom output. An example is code to generate points uniformly distributed on the surface of a sphere, say, and the result is that there are significantly more points in the northern hemisphere than the southern one. Vomer Flap Surgery

Vomer Flap Surgery

$60.54

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Vomer flap surgery was used prior to 1975 as a surgical treatment for children with cleft palate. In this procedure, the vomer bone was used to reconstruct the palate and cover the cleft. The vomer is a triangle shaped bone that forms the inferior and posterior portion of the nasal septum (www.emedicine.com/plastic/topic519.htm). A vomer flap is a type of palatoplasty surgery that uses the mucoperiosteal tissue of the vomer to cover a unilateral or bilateral cleft palate. This procedure can be used to reconstruct the nasal or oral surfaces by either raising the vomer or creating a flap. Surgical procedures can be combined according to type of clefting in order to ensure the best outcomes for the patient. Vomer flap surgery involves the suture line of the vomer bone which is an important site for midface growth. In this case, a suture line refers to boundary between two bony plates which eventually grow together as the child matures. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Hand Surgery by Christer, Emory [Paperback]

Hand Surgery by Christer, Emory [Paperback]

$76.47

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The field of hand surgery deals with both surgical and nonsurgical treatment of conditions and problems that may take place in the hand or upper extremity (commonly from the tip of the hand to the shoulder). Hand surgery may be practiced by graduates of general surgery, orthopedic surgery and plastic surgery. Plastic surgeons and orthopedic surgeons receive significant training in hand surgery during their residency training, with some graduates continuing on to do an additional one year hand fellowship. These fellowships are sometimes also pursued by general surgeons. Plastic surgeons are particularly well suited to handle traumatic hand and digit amputations that require a replant operation. Orthopedic surgeons are trained to reconstruct all aspects to salvage the appendage: tendons, muscle, bone. Orthopedic surgeons are particularly well suited to handle complex fractures of the hand and injuries to the carpal bones that alter the mechanics of the wrist. Physician Communication Style and Patient Satisfaction

Physician Communication Style and Patient Satisfaction

$95.59

A medical consultation has three main functions: for the patient to narrate to the physician symptoms and relevant concerns, for the physician to learn about the patients condition in order to reach a diagnosis and a treatment plan. How physicians and patients communicate with each other is key toward patient satisfaction, which may have impact on patient adherence to medical regimen, and consequently, the efficiency of the health care system. This research sampled thirtyone physicianpatient consultations in a Canadian northern community which were audiotaped and transcribed verbatim. The Roter Interaction Analysis System was used to microanalyze the speech patterns of physicians and patients. The findings of this research should be of high interest to medical students, physicians, health policy makers, public health researchers, and most of all, recipients of health care patients.
