Secret $26.99 Ayumi Hamasaki belongs to the top tier of Japanese musicians who find it almost impossible to do something below a certain level, so it’s not really surprising that Secret is a competent album with immense charting power. However, while it excels in production and does well in the fun department, its artistic merit is ambiguous (though that doesn’t equal “bad”). Being the product of Hamasaki’s J-rock period, Secret does feature a lot of guitar playing, but the riffs usually just follow the general direction that the songs take, and that can be pretty much everything from classic hard rock and piano ballads to industrial-lite numbers, ABBA-styled disco, and Euro-dance adaptations (the latter two being especially prominent). The only constants besides guitar lines are techno beats, background synths, and Hamasaki’s singing, which is so steadily heartfelt it sounds calculated — but there’s always plenty of other things in the mix, from acoustic breaks and children’s choruses to strings and new age keyboards. This sounds like the recipe for a dynamic and varied album, but, ballads aside, the mood doesn’t really change from start to finish, and all in all, the stylistic jumble is too big to make out what the record really sounds like. It’s not quite like the case of Gackt — a popular J-rocker whose tunes are so perfect they’re unidentifiable — but the whole of Secret is less than the sum of its parts. Taken separately, each song is catchy and dramatic enough, but when put together, they fail to leave a clear impression. But then, such evasiveness may be a virtue for a pop album, and the puzzlement over whether Secret is meant for dancing, dreaming, or rocking out makes up somewhat for the clich?d melodies that Hamasaki indulges in on the latter half of the record. ~ Alexey Eremenko

Secret Code $32.99 For their fourth studio release, the massively popular boy band Tohoshinki embraced the same type of progression seen by other Japanese boy bands in recent albums. Where they originally sang straightforward bits of mainstream pop with a basic, underlying hip-hop influence, their latest CD, Secret Code, shows the group starting to explore more retro influences within the genre as well as inklings of others. The album opens with a jazz-heavy bit of spy movie music, like something Yoko Kanno might have penned for Cowboy Bebop. It transitions over the course of “Force” from that jazz into more standardized R&B, which it holds on to for a few well-performed, if relatively unmemorable, songs. There’s a bit of a jump in energy with the largely instrumental “9095,” followed by a bit of Korean in “Mirotic.” There’s just a touch of funk in “Stand Up!,” and more than a touch of dance-electronica in “Survivor.” Though there are additional bits of standard pop balladry closing out the rest of the album, there’s a secret closing track waiting for listeners. An a cappella version of an earlier track gives the listener a chance to hear what the boys can actually do without all of the backing tracks. The result is a nice one, though it seems more a standard ploy than a true musical development. The album is nice all the way through — it’s rarely more than “nice,” but it never falls below the bar, either. ~ Adam Greenberg

If you’re like me, you get skeptical when you read a face cream review. They are all so glowing and claim that this or that skin cream will work wonders on your skin. It’s easy to believe the promises skincare companies make if you don’t know better. What do I mean? Well, there’s no oversight in the cosmetics industry, so false advertising is widespread and unchecked.

Instead of trying to figure out if a review is genuine or not, I recommend doing your own face cream reviews. It’s all a matter of knowing what to look for; once you know that you’ll be able to expertly judge a skincare product in minutes.

Focus on three simple things. Ask yourself these three questions:

1. Do the ingredients come from nature?

All the ingredients on the label should be natural, active, and highly concentrated. Here are a few you would like to see: vitamin E, avocado oil, manuka honey, and coenzyme Q10.

Skin cells better absorb natural ingredients. This deep level of absorption allows them to help your skin produce new collagen and elastin on its own. Natural substances also block free radicals from damaging cells; this damage is one of the roots of skin aging.

To have success with skin creams, you need ingredients that kind of pinch your skin cells and tell them, “hey, wake up and start functioning like you did when I was younger”. This is what natural ingredients do for you.

2. Are any of the ingredients chemicals?

Cosmetic companies widely use chemicals in their skin creams, because they are cheap. If you research different brands of face cream, you will run across them. Here are a few to look for on the label: mineral oil, fragrances, alcohols, and parabens.

Why are they used? Besides being cheap, some of them technically work. For example, mineral oil is used for moisturizing. Yes, it locks moisture into skin, but only by coating your skin and clogging pores. That’s unacceptable. Clogged pores prevent toxin elimination, which often leads to an acne outbreak.

Chemical synthetic alternatives may work, but they all have a downside. In your face cream reviews, make sure you don’t find a single one.

3. Has the face cream been tested for effectiveness?

A lot of cosmetics companies formulate face creams without any expert knowledge. If you read a claim that a certain product smoothes wrinkles or moisturizers, there should be proof. In your own face cream review, look for clinical testing on humans. It’s essential in determining whether a face cream is for real or just hyped.

Any company that conducts clinical trials is dedicated to researching and developing products with the most effective ingredients. How do I know? Because actually proving (scientifically) that your products work requires a large commitment of time, money, and resources. As a consumer, you can feel confident that you’re buying a quality product since so much has been invested in bringing it to market.
